Ghosts of Manor House
About Ghosts of Manor House
We sat down with the author of GHOSTS OF MANOR HOUSE, Matt Powers, to find out a little bit more about the piece.
BWP: What inspired the writing of GHOSTS OF MANOR HOUSE?
MATT: I wanted to write something spooky and creepy. I have always been fascinated by haunted houses and ghosts. The idea that a house is an entity, a being with needs and desires, is intriguing to me. A haunted house has a history and a certain mysterious power to it. I wanted to write about a house, its history, their ghosts, and the people drawn to it.
BWP: Why a scary story? Are you drawn to this genre?
MATT: I don’t think of GoMH as a scary story as much as a story about the unknown. And certainly, the unknown can be scary. I wanted to write something that kept the reader guessing and had some twists and turns. And when the book is over I hope readers of GoMH think about the people and what motivated them. Is Manor House a good entity? Evil? Or misguided, misunderstood, or none of the above? Even to ask themselves, is the ending a happy ending? The fact that people may think about that means that house must have registered some thought and needs and personality to them.
BWP: Any favorite books? These are the key books that inspired me to write GoMH:
MATT: The Shining by Stephen King
The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson
Hell House by Richard Matheson
BWP: Are you working on any new books?
MATT: I am doing some writing now, not as much as I would like. I started a new job which is taking a lot of my time. I have lots of ideas for stories and characters which I write down and think about a lot.
BWP: Anything else you want to share?
MATT: I hope I succeeded in writing a haunted house book that is engaging, a bit creepy, and interesting. My main goal was to write something people will enjoy reading. I think I did a great job. Of course, in the end, it is my readers that will decide. I made a deal with Lucas to write the story. Now it is up to the readers to determine if I told it well.
